Sport washed out

What promised to be a big weekend of early Christmas festivities for Cowra sporting codes turned into a washout after close to two inches of rain fell across the district last Friday night.

Cricket and racing were both cancelled when Saturday’s forecast rain fell early leaving local facilities waterlogged.

On Saturday morning, with sections of the Cowra Showground underwater Cowra Jockey Club and Racing NSW official made the decision to postpone the Cowra races which doubled as a Christmas Party venue for many locals.

The five race program was officially abandoned.

The previous day’s Mudgee Cup was also called off early after six of the scheduled eight races were completed.

The day’s feature event, the 1400 metre Mudgee Cup, a Big Dance eligibility race, was one of the day races called off due to storm activity.

Racing NSW is considering options to reschedule the cup.

As a result of the lost races at Cowra and Mudgee Racing NSW has added an extra Maiden event to this Friday’s Mudgee program and amended a scheduled Class 1 and Maiden Plate to be conducted as a Benchmark 50 handicap.

Cowra cricket was also disrupted with all Stage 2 cricket cancelled on Saturday.

Cowra Senior Cricket, with an eye on the weather made the call earlier in the week to postpone the start of its Twenty20 Big Bash competition.
