The Cowra Magpies have officially announced Jake Slattery as captain of the Senior Men’s team for the 2025 season.
Known for his toughness, leadership, and respect both within the team and the broader community, Jake exemplifies the qualities of a strong leader on and off the field.
Having been the youngest member of the leadership group last season, Jake demonstrated significant on-field leadership, particularly in the latter part of the season.
His ability to rally the team during crucial moments, coupled with his drive and determination, has earned him the captaincy for the upcoming season.
Club President Bruce Wallace highlighted Jake’s natural leadership qualities, describing him as a player whose actions inspire those around him.
“Jake is the type of player everyone likes to follow,” Wallace said.
“He’s incredibly tough on the field and has the respect of the playing group, the club, sponsors, and the entire town.”
Wallace pointed to a standout moment from last year’s game against Peak Hill as an example of Jake’s impact.
“When Jake came back on, his aggression, toughness, and leadership completely changed the momentum of the game. It was an incredible display of what makes him such a valuable player and leader,” he said.
As a local junior and one of the youngest captains in the club’s history, Jake’s appointment reflects the Magpies’ focus on fostering homegrown talent.
“Jake comes from a great family and is well-known around town, making him a perfect ambassador for the club both on and off the field,” Wallace added.
The Magpies are aiming to build on last year’s performance and take their game to the next level, with hopes of progressing further in the premiership.
A key focus is on maintaining player health to avoid the injury challenges that hindered their 2024 campaign.
“We want to be competitive, improve on last season, and address unfinished business from the previous year,” Wallace stated.
“With Jake at the helm, supported by a strong leadership group, we’re confident in achieving these objectives.”
The team has bolstered its roster for 2025, with plans to reduce the workload on key players like Jake and provide opportunities for all players to contribute.
Senior Men’s Coach Phil Ingram praised Jake’s leadership progression last season, noting how his on-field performances set the tone for the team.
“Jake was part of the leadership group last year, and over the season, he really stepped up, especially in the back half,” Ingram said.
“He took a lot of tough carries, put the boys on his back, and showed the way forward.”
Ingram emphasised the club’s focus on long-term growth, with Jake at the forefront of their vision.
“We’re thinking towards the future. We’ve got a few older players who might be in their last season and a lot of younger ones coming through. Jake’s leadership will be vital in guiding the team and preparing for what’s ahead,” Ingram explained.
With a young and dynamic squad, the Magpies are optimistic about their chances in 2025.
Ingram believes Jake doesn’t need to change much, as his natural leadership already resonates strongly with the team.
“When he speaks, the boys listen,” Ingram said.
“He’s just got to lead from the front again, and I’m confident the team will follow.”
Jake Slattery’s appointment as captain underscores the Magpies’ commitment to hard work, resilience, and respect—values that define the club and its community.
“Jake represents everything we stand for as a club,” Wallace said.
