Linda’s big Japan trip

Linda Barron from Cowra Shire Council has just returned from her work-related trip to Japan.

Barron, a popular staff member, has worked tirelessly over the years along with other councilors and staff, to nurture Cowra's special relationships with the Japanese and the city of Joetsu more specifically - Cowra's sister city of Peace. For Barron, the trip of a lifetime brought not only new experiences and connections but friends for life as well.

"I had a great time in Japan - the people were very friendly," said Linda.

"I met a lot of wonderful people and it was a very productive trip.

"The generosity and hospitality was second to none and recommend to anyone who's thinking about travelling to Japan to do it!"

The staff exchange program between Cowra Council and Joetsu City Council has re-started after 6 years (due to Covid) and Linda Barron, Cowra Shire Council's Community Development Officer has had the privilege of travelling over to Joetsu for two weeks.

"There was so much to see and do and it is a must for anyone who loves to travel," she said.

The Peace and Friendship agreement between our two Councils was established in 2003 to encourage connection between our people and promote peace through friendship and cultural understanding. Both towns hosted Prisoner-of-War Camps in World War II, with tragic events happening at each of the camps. 60 Australian soldiers perished at the Naoetsu Camp. Both communities have seen strong reconciliation efforts between Australians and Japanese in efforts to build peace and ensure these tragedies are never repeated.

"I was warmly welcomed and looked after tremendously well."
