Basson holds on to take A Grade Matchplay Champs

The Cowra Golf Club Championships delivered in spades on the weekend when the finals of the Matchplay were held at Cowra Golf Club.

The matches were played over 36 holes and featured some tight contests across all three grades.

In C Grade, Jeff Marks got the job done against Matt Devlin taking the title 5/3 in a match that was a lot closer than the final margin suggested.

In B grade John Jensen got off to a hot start winning five holes on the front nine alone before Ben Colby sprung into action. Despite a gallant fightback, Colby had too much ground to make up with John Jensen winning the match 5/4 to cap a great season.

Yet it was A Grade that produced the most memorable of the three finals with one for the ages between Patrick Edenborough and Nicky Basson.

Patrick was five down after 18 holes but clawed his way back on the second 18 to square things up on the penultimate hole to take Basson into a sudden death playoff.

After squaring the first extra hole, Nicky kept his composure and won the match on the 38th hole with a birdie putt he won't forget any time soon.

It was a great effort by Edenborough who looked finished for all money only to rally late and nearly steal it at the death from Basson.

Well done to our Cowra Golf Club Matchplay Champions 2024!
