Works swing into action

Cabonne Council has made significant progress at Canowindra’s swinging bridge site, where efforts to stabilise the Belubula riverbanks are well underway.

The old swinging bridge was removed earlier this year.

The banks of the Belubula River suffered significant damage during the November 2022 flood event, eroding a significant amount of soil from both banks of the river.

“Rock armouring and recontouring works of the banks will help to prevent erosion, ensuring the long-term stability of both the riverbanks and the foundations of the new bridge,” a spokesperson for Cabonne Council said.

Following the stabilisation works, landscaping will begin with the planting of trees and grasses.

Construction of the new swinging bridge is scheduled to begin next month.

A new Belubula Riverwalk along the northern side of the Belubula River at Canowindra began on October 14.

Once completed the pathway will create a link between the swinging bridge area and Canowindra Road.

Originally constructed in 1925 the swinging bridge, prior to its demolition this year, had undergone a number of significant repairs and rebuilds including significant structural works in the 1990's.

The new bridge will be constructed from steel and reference heritage aspects of the previous bridge including location, height, size and style.

The bridge will have new ramps leading to the deck to improve accessibility and will be built to better withstand flood events and improved safety and accessibility.

All works are due to be completed by the end of 2024.
