Suspended driver followed for 2km before stopping

Police followed a 21-year-old Cowra man for 2.3km before he stopped after he was seen driving a car without registration plates.

The man, Adam Raymond Vardy has pleaded guilty to six driving offences when he appeared at Cowra Local Court on Tuesday, July 23.

Vardy faced charges of driving with illicit drugs in his system, driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving a vehicle with unpaid tax, and a speeding offence.

The charge of driving with illicit drugs in his system occurred on January 4, 2024.

Regarding the other incidents on May 30, Vardy's solicitor explained it was "a vehicle he just purchased."

Magistrate Rana Daher convicted Vardy, fining him a total of $2,120 and disqualifying his licence for a further six months.

Police documents tabled in court revealed Vardy was seen driving a vehicle without registration plates at 9.49pm on May 30.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle on Brisbane Avenue Vardy turned left on to Darling Avenue.

He then turned on to Baronga Street and Brisbane Avenue at high speed before turning left at high speed on a roundabout on Vaux Street.

Police said Vardy then turned left at a roundabout into Taragala street at speed estimated to be no less than 85km/hr and not more than 95km/hr in a 50km/hr zone before breaking heavily and turning on to Courallie Lane and stopping at the rear of a Courallie Street address.

The documents revealed police stopped behind Vardy's vehicle, removing him from the driver's seat.

Asked if he had a licence Vardy replied "It's suspended".

In an unrelated matter Vardy was stopped by police about 2.09pm on February 4 this year on Brisbane Street for random testing.

A breath test returned a negative reading but an oral fluid test returned a positive reading for cannabis.

A secondary test conducted at Cowra Police station returned a positive reading for Cocaine and Cannabis.

"I smoked cannabis just before I left home, but I don't use cocaine," Vardy told police.
