Cowra is to host Ben Farinazzo as this year’s Australia Day Ambassador.
A veteran of the Australian Defence Force, a gold medallist at the Invictus Games, and a tireless advocate for mental health, Ben’s life is a powerful testament to resilience, community, and hope.
Ben’s story is one of extraordinary courage and determination.
Born with proud Italian and Aboriginal heritage, he served in East Timor during his time in the Australian Defence Force.
However, life presented Ben with challenges that could have ended his story.

He battled severe mental health struggles while recovering from catastrophic physical injuries, including a broken neck and back.
Instead of being defeated by these adversities, Ben channeled his strength into an inspiring recovery.
Through sheer determination and the unwavering support of his family and community, Ben not only reclaimed his life but also represented Australia at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018.
Competing in indoor rowing and powerlifting, Ben’s incredible performance earned him two gold medals.
“What kept me motivated was the tremendous support from my family and the community,” he said.
“It gave me the opportunity to see what happens next, what the future holds, and to experience life anew every day.”
Ben’s journey didn’t stop there.
Today, he is a sought-after speaker and advocate for mental health and wellbeing, particularly focusing on the veteran community.
He collaborates with several national charities and organisations to shine a light on mental health issues and provide hope to those who feel trapped in darkness.
“I’ve learned to take responsibility for my own mental health and understand what I need to do daily and weekly to maintain it,” Ben said.
“Once I get that right, I’m able to reach out and support others in their journeys.”
Ben also draws strength from his rich cultural heritage.
As someone with Italian and Aboriginal roots, he believes in fostering resilience through an understanding of one’s history and values.
“Australia is a lucky country, but there are still many Australians doing it tough,” he said.
“Together, we can come together to help those in need.”
As an Australia Day Ambassador, Ben is passionate about the significance of the day and what it represents.
“Australia Day is a time for us to reflect, respect, and celebrate what it means to be Australian.
“It’s an evolving story, and sharing and listening to each other’s stories is vital,” he said.
He encourages all Australians to embrace the day in their own unique way while remembering the importance of unity and compassion.
For Ben, this year’s visit to Cowra is deeply personal.
“Cowra holds a special place in my family’s history.
“My mother and her siblings spent time around the mission when my grandparents ran it in the late ’50s.
“I’m very much looking forward to reconnecting with this part of our story and meeting the wonderful Cowra community,” he said.
In addition to being a celebration, Ben hopes Australia Day serves as a reminder to seek help and support during tough times.
“Pick up the phone, call someone, or contact Lifeline.
“There are people out there who love and care for you, and you’ll be surprised at how many will support you during tough times,” he said.
